General
Popular with both brewers and non-brewers alike, Beach tray No. 11 known as “Friends” (which appears mostly on large oval versions), carries a copyright of 1905 by Chas Ehlen.  Ehlen was apparently an artist/illustrator around the turn of the century.  Another of his works “Shepherd Walking Sheep,” appears in a Gibson Art Company ad in Volume 32 of The American Printer, but no biographical information on him has been found as part of our research.  The image was also published as postcard, but with 1901 copyright date.
Shape & Rim & Ad Text
“Friends” was produced mainly as an oval tray, but 17” chargers were also produced.  Most trays sport a rim with cherubs and bridle straps in a green & black pattern.  Some, presumably later versions, have either a black rim with gold text or a gold rim with black text.  The cherub and bridle rimmed versions tend to have advertising text printed on the face of the tray for readability; however, at least one brewer (Roseneck Brewing of Richmond) printed its name on the rim.

Hager & Price
This tray appears in Hager’s version of the catalog but isn’t discussed individually.  Prices for trays tend to be surprisingly strong for both brewers and non-brewers given how relatively common this stock tray is.  Chargers however don’t fare so well overall, although select brewery version do better.
