General
This stock image must have been created at the tail-end of Tuscarora, shortly before their merger with Beach’s Standard Advertising in early 1901.  She does not appear in Tuscarora’s 1900 Price List, which ends at No. 12, but does appear in Meek & Beach Catalog 12 (1901) where it is described as “Lithographed in nine colors."  Design, "as indicated in cut" is "child leaning on marble-top table arranging bunch of Roses."

The raised border of Tray is ornamented with a wreath of roses.”  The catalog featured a wide variety of other items M&B produced, but only four trays (Nos. 1, 10, 14, and 16), with brief descriptions and a picture (“as indicated in cut” in the description), whereas the 1900 Tuscarora price list had all trays available at that time, but only with descriptions.
As a tray, this always appears with a landscape orientation, with an oval shape.  Tuscarora versions have a lower rim, with a flat edge section similar to some of the early flat pie/plate versions that Shonk frequently produced.  The one exception known to two these two types, is an 11"x14" small rectangle version by O.R. Potter - Wallpaper.  M&B versions have a simpler rolled lip, without the flat edge.

The version pictured in M&B Catalog 12 carries the more elaborate rim with rose design, while later (M&B) versions appear with the simpler “drape” rim, usually in blue.  There are a few examples of portrait oriented narrow SFT signs (usually with a light faux woodgrain “frame”) and at least one litho on paper (West End Bottling), although this cannot be confirmed as being produced by M&B.  Tuscarora rose-rimmed versions tend to feature advertising text on the face, while M&B drape rim versions start to have advertising text on the rim, although quite a few still have it only on the face.  This may be the first new design to sport the drape rim and M&B (or the advertisers) may not yet have recognized the opportunity to use the rim instead of the face.

We also discovered a celluloid pocket mirror, with the image of the little girl posed in the same manner as the tray.  The pocket mirror image appears to be from an actual photograph, indicating that at least some of the individuals (usually women or children) where modeled on actual people.  We do not know who produced the pocket mirror.

Shape & Rim & Ad Text
This tray is the earliest one in the entire Coshocton catalog to feature advertising text that is not gold or black.  The red text on the Tuscarora version (with the rose rim) places this practice in the 1900/1901 timeframe.  Although other examples with red text appear later, black and gold remained the predominant color for advertising text.

Hager & Price
Hager has a lengthy discussion regarding the insights from M&B Catalog 12, permitting the identification of earlier trays as Tuscarora (few of which carried any Tuscarora markings), including this particular image.  He states that he never saw a version with the Tuscarora rose rim, only plenty with the drape rim, however we have fortunately found some rose rims during our years of monitoring auctions and Breweriana shows.

Another change that occurred at this time involves the border around the image (where the stock number is typically found): on Tuscarora trays this tends to be a thin band (frequently yellow), with solid lines, looking like a stitched ribbon finishing the draped material.  On M&B trays this is a much wider band, with less uniform lines, although still frequently yellow.

Prices for these trays tend to be pretty moderate for non-brewers and strong, but not outstanding for brewers.  These reasonable prices are a nice benefit for those who are fortunate enough to own one, as these trays are amazing when you have one in your hands and on your wall and there is a chance you got it at a nice price.

There is not enough of a sample to meaningfully compare a price differences between Tuscarora and M&B versions of this tray.
