General
No. 62 "12 O'clock" is the first design, aside from images of political figures like McKinley, Roosevelt, Parker and Mitchell, where the individuals portrayed appear contemporary.  Just a bunch of working stiffs enjoying some cold ones during a break.  Not surprisingly, this design was popular with brewers and pretty much nobody else.  The one exception was Thurston & Kingsbury, a wholesale grocer based in Bangor, ME who used at least 16 different M&B/Meek stock design trays over the years.

We’ve never encountered an example of this design carrying an artist signature, nor can we find any image or painting upon which this might have been based.  At this point, we are beyond designs listed in any of the catalogues or price lists.  There also isn’t anything in the Sahling workbook that looks like it might be this design, so we lack any insight into the provenance of this design.

Shape & Rim & Ad Text
All of the tray examples we’ve seen are 13” convex pie shapes like No. 45 (Good Friends) with green rims.  The one possible exception is Ryans Lager & Sparkling Ales of Syracuse, NY with a black rim; however, it may just be that the image we have is dark and it’s also green.    Advertising text appears mostly on the rim in either gold or black print; Reno Brewing and Wm Rahr & Sons use red print.  Ashland Brewing of Ashland, WI is an exception with gold text appearing on the face of the tray.  There are also TOC sign versions with a round image and faux woodgrain text and gold advertising text.  Finally, there are tip tray versions where the image has been simplified—the third man in the light blue shirt is replaced with a keg.  Some full-size trays carry a 1905 copyright date, while the tip size carries a 1907 copyright date.

Hager & Price
Also included in Hager’s catalog, but not discussed.  Prices tend to be pretty robust for this design across the board, but are variable based on condition and desirability of the particular brewery.  Reno, Enterprise and Fleckstein show up most frequently.  Even prices for the Thurston & Kingsbury and stock sample version are relatively strong compared to similar contemporary designs.
