Condition & Brewer Dependent

General
No. 69 is the first trompe l'oeil design in the catalog, mimicking a straw plate with serving doily.  Later trompe l’oeil designs featured faux woodgrain and Japanese lacquerware.  It’s also one of the few stock trays where the design extends all the way to the edge of the tray, eliminating the more typical rim.  It’s a pretty straightforward design, although we do note some variations in the orientation of the doily on the plate with relation to the advertising text.  Strangely enough, despite the somewhat less masculine nature of this design, the surprising majority of examples we’ve encountered are from brewers.  Other examples are all from food or drink products, perhaps playing off the self-referential tray and doily metaphor.  There is no entry in Sahling’s workbook that seems to correspond to this design.

Shape & Rim & Ad Text
No. 69 continues the use of the 13” convex pie shape, with all known examples being in this form.  This design does not have the typical separation between the face of the tray and the rim; instead, the faux straw plate extends to the very edge, so there are no variations in rim color or design.  Most examples feature advertising text and/or symbols on the white doily centered in the tray with a few (Idaho & Portland Brewing Co.s) featuring text on the rim.  One (Tosetti) even features a beer bottle.  All examples we have seen have been full sized tray versions, no tip or sign variations.

Hager & Price
Hager includes this in his catalog, but doesn’t discuss it, nor does he include it in his date range listing.  As noted, the vast majority of issuers were brewers and prices tend to be comparatively strong, but not exceptional.  The prices for the few non-breweries are generally much lower and unimpressive.
