General
Everything about this tray screams early stock tray, not only the size and shape but the name panels on the rim. However, the only example encountered is the version referenced below—by Jos Striebich Wines & Liquors of Bellaire, OH. We believe there is a salesman sample version, but we do not have a picture - if you have this image, please contact us
Hager & Pricing
Hager, in his “Meek Stock Trays: Coshocton Collectibles” article in The Breweriana Collector Volume 101 has this same example and discusses it in a subsection entitled The Question Marks. “There are a number of trays which have the right characteristics to make them be part of the catalogue. This tray carries no litho markings, but is clearly part of the early catalogue with Tuscarora heritage.”
Hager speculatively placed it as possibly No. 2; however, the 1900 Tuscarora price list identified and describes stock trays No. 1-12 and this one definitely is not among them. These name panel rims only seem to occur in early trays (at least among stock trays) and were phased out by at least 1903. The unknown pre-1903 stock trays include the following numbers: 15, 18, 19, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. Could she have been one of these? Or, it is believed that Tuscarora had some stock images before they started the numbering scheme—could she have been one of these? It will remain a mystery unless and until other examples are identified. Based on the richness of these graphics, that is liquor related, so early and the girl being quite pretty, if this tray became available it would have a strong price.
