General
No. 116, "The Invitation" is one of the most popular stock designs produced by AAW. This common tray was particularly popular with brewers. With an attractive woman sipping a beer giving that sideways look (“The Invitation”) it may have been one of the most overt early advertisements to link sex and beer, an approach that is alive and well today, sometimes going a little further than mere suggestion.

Budweiser Girls of the 1980's
McEntee's Rexall Girl
By this time, AAW had figured out the technique to reproduce an image in different sizes from the same source; hence you will find this image in both full-sized concave pie and tip tray versions. Detroit Brewing issued both versions, as did Claussen. AAW also produced a small (10.5" x 13.5") rectangular version which is slightly more common than the pie version and a square (13.5" x 13.5") version, which is far less common and features a round image on a square tray, with ample rim and surface area for advertising text. Cola Nip issued both an 10.5" x 13.5" full sized tray and a small rectangular tip version. Moehn Brewing mixed it up with an 10.5" x 13.5" tray version and a round tip version. There are also TOC and curled corner sign versions.
In all cases she is sipping a glass of beer, but anatomically, it almost appears that this arm and beer were added to an existing image as the proportions of her arm seem to be just slightly smaller than you might expect them to be.
This design is signed by W.H. McEntee who had produced No. 110. Rose of Killarney and No. 111, Chrysanthemum Girl among a number of designs he provided to AAW. He also produced designs for other tray manufacturers and advertisers as well, which we suspect was to supplement his income to support his work as a fine artist. He clearly had such ambitions, having studied at the Académie Julian as a student of William Bouguereau and exhibited at the Paris Salon. Despite such ambitions, McEntee is mainly remembered as an illustrator specializing in people and portraits, particularly of attractive young women. A permanent exhibition of McEntee's works is located at the Chippewa Valley Museum.
Adolph Sahling Workbooks
Sahling has workbook entries starting in January 1911; he also has entries for a tip tray sized version in May of 1911.
Size, Shape and Advertising Placement
This design came in 13” pie shapes and 11x14 small rectangles, as well as TOC and curled corner sign versions. There is one square version (Fink Brewing of Harrisburg, PA) featuring a round image; it has a woodgrain rim like some of the rectangular versions. Almost all of the pie shaped versions are concave, with a small percentage featuring convex rims (Peter Breidt, Billings, Popel-Giller and Silver Spring). The most common advertising text on the rim was gold lettering, in all kinds of different eye-catching fonts. Typically all of the verbiage is on the rim, but in a few cases they chose to add additional verbiage or log. on the face of the tray. A good example is the Atlas Brewing Co. version, with the word "Magnet" really drawing your eyes. On pie versions rims are typically black or dark green. Rectangle version rims are either black or woodgrain, with the exception of Fred Sehring which sports a gold rim (and black text).
Hager & Price
This tray is represented in Hager's article, but no details are provided for this super common tray. Prices of this tray are driven by brewery desirability condition and can vary all over the map. More common breweries rarely exceed low triple figures; less common breweries reach the mid-triple figures. A few rare brewery examples in excellent condition have reach upper triple figures and even low four figures.
