Type: Inverted Pie
Scarcity: Common
Value: $$$ to $$$$
Condition & Brewer Dependent
General
No. 36 does not appears in any M&B Catalogue we possess although it likely already existed by the time catalogue No. 16 was printed. In a November 1903 article trade journal Printers Ink Jasper Meek references the Roosevelt (No. 47), Pope Leo (No. 39) and John Mitchell (No. 43) trays. It is included in the 1903 price list as “No. 36, Music.”
This tray debuted the faux marble rim design which offered a better printing surface than most rim designs up to this point. The main design itself is the first two feature two figures since No. 2 (excepting the political jugate trays related to the 1900 election) and marks the beginning a series of design that suggest some sort of back story.
Size & Shape
Known tray examples are all oval with the low pie shaped rim and rolled edge. All tray versions show up sporting the faux marble and we have not encountered any sign versions of this image. Advertising text usually appears on the rim usually in black text with some occurrences on the face of the tray (e.g., The Fashion Store).
Hager & Price
Hager does not discuss this design but does include a picture of it in his catalog. Blank stock sample are encountered fairly frequently and there is a reasonably good mix of brewer and non-brewer examples, particularly among shoe and liquor dealers. Prices are fairly strong for brewery example. Prices for non-brewers and stock samples are fairly typical (inexpensive) with the very notable exception of a Dr. Pepper example that went for $7,500 several years ago.
