 Comments:

From the Collection of Mark Rogers.

"Founded in 1883 by brothers Gottfried, Michael, and Wilhelm Piel, Piels Beer of Brooklyn, New York, was popular with working-class consumers across the Northeast as a lower-priced regional brand.

In 1955, Piels hired Young & Rubicam of New York to develop a television advertising campaign. Copywriter Ed Graham created Bert and Harry Piel, fictitious owners and promoters of the beer.  Jack Sidebotham drew the cartoon artwork. Famous radio comedy duo Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding of the Bob and Ray Show voiced the characters, who were opposites. Bert (Goulding) was short and bombastic, while Harry (Elliott) was tall and soft-spoken.

The ad campaign was among the first to use humor to sell a product on television. Its appeal was in the earnestness with which the brothers mocked conventional TV sales talk with slogans like “Throat-wise, it’s delicious.” Bert and Harry were tested in two regional markets. Piels’ sales skyrocketed after the TV spot aired, and the campaign was a notable success.

Although the commercials did not air nationally, their popularity garnered considerable press coverage. By 1956, Bert and Harry were seen all over the Northeast and reshaped the nature of TV advertising. Piels beer sales increased by 21 percent. There was a Bert and Harry fan club, and people wrote them letters. In response to fan requests, Piels placed ads in a Manhattan newspaper that listed the stations and times when the 20- and 60-second beer commercials would air.

However, after more than 100 TV spots, Young & Rubicam replaced Bert and Harry in 1960 with a new campaign featuring live actors. More than one-and-a-half million customers wrote angry letters, and Piels’ sales plummeted. Two years later, Young & Rubicam acknowledged the marketing blunder and attempted to bring back Bert and Harry, but their efforts failed. Piels was sold in 1962."
